Úspešný londýnsky chirurg Martin Ellingham sa rozhodne dať zbohom mestu aj kariére a odchádza na vidiek do ospalej dedinky Cornish, aby sa tu pôsobil ako praktický lekár. Má síce skvelé chirurgické schopnosti, ale úplne mu chýba schopnosť komunikovať s ľuďmi, čo jeho novým pacientom čoskoro začne ísť na nervy. Naviac je v ordinácii zmätok po jeho predchodcovi, lekárske vybavenie je neopraviteľné a v záznamoch o pacientoch panuje neporiadok. "Korunkou" v jeho novej ordinácií je však Elaine Denhamová, najneschopnejšia sekretárka v kraji, ktorú zdedil po svojom predchodcovi.
