Uhorská šľachtičná Alžbeta Báthoryová je bohatá, obdivovaná a obávaná žena. Nechce sa podriadiť predstavám, že vláda je výsadou mužov. Keď sa zoznámi s mladým Štefanom Thurzom, obaja sa do seba zaľúbia. Ich láska však netrvá dlho. Štefanov otec Juraj Thurzo vymyslí konšpiračný plán, aby sa jeho syn musel s Alžbetou rozísť pre veľký vekový rozdiel. Povráva sa totiž, že Alžbeta svoju krásu vykupuje krvou nespočetných nevinných obetí, v ktorej sa kúpe, aby si uchovala sviežosť svojej mladosti.
