Student Erik Lanshof, gespeeld door Rutger Hauer, is in 1939 aanvankelijk onbezorgd over de toekomst. De ellende in de wereld gaat aan hem en zijn mede-studenten voorbij. Als op 10 mei 1940 in Nederland de oorlog uitbreekt, vlucht de avontuurlijke Erik naar Engeland, waar hij zich aansluit bij het verzet. In Londen zetelt inmiddels ook de Nederlandse regering. Ver weg van de werkelijkheid in eigen land, dringt de ernst van de Duitse onderdrukking nauwelijks tot hen door. Voor Erik is dit de reden om over te gaan tot actie. Zich bewust van de noodzaak om in Nederland een nieuw inlichtingennet op te zetten, brengt hij hiervoor geheimagenten met zendinstallaties aan land. Daarnaast krijgt hij van Koningin Wilhelmina de opdracht belangrijke politici en militairen veilig over te brengen naar Londen. Als Nederland in mei 1945 eindelijk wordt bevrijd, blijken slechts enkele vrienden van de groep uit 1939 het einde van de oorlog te hebben gehaald.
