Twee Nederlandse kinderen stuiten op een open plek in het bos waar kabouters hun gang gaan. De kabouters zijn vriendelijk tegen de kinderen. Een heks komt en neemt ze mee op haar bezem naar haar peperkoekhuisje, waar ze gemeen tegen ze wordt, de jongen in een spin verandert, haar jankende kat in steen, en probeert het meisje in een rat te veranderen als de pijl van een kabouter haar tegenhoudt. . Terwijl de kabouters tegen de heks vechten, bevrijden Hans en Grietje de andere kinderen die door de heks gevangen zijn gezet en getransformeerd.
