In dit verhaal uit het tijdperk van de depressie reist Calef van Michigan naar Californië en stopt in Spooner, Missouri, waar Lute hem inhuurt voor klusjes. Calef krijgt een relatie met Lute's nichtje, Hannah. Maar ze is getrouwd met Sidney, een dronkaard die zijn vrouw slaat en hoopt het geld van zijn schoonoom te erven. Sidney en een excentrieke predikant spannen samen tegen Calef, die het moeilijk vindt om zijn mysterieuze verleden en zijn groeiende genegenheid voor Sidney's vrouw te verbergen.
