Het is het late voorjaar van 1942 en de Grote Patriottische Oorlog is in volle gang. Ver weg van de frontlinie, op een door God vergeten kruispunt, voeren de Duitsers een luchtlandingsoperatie uit in een poging de Kirov-spoorlijn en de Witte Zee - het Oostzeekanaal - te bereiken. Dit zijn niet zomaar parachutisten. Dit is een team van doorgewinterde en hoogopgeleide infiltranten, de elite van de Waffen-SS, supermensen. Het enige wat hen in de weg staat is een luchtafweerartillerie-eenheid van korporaal Vaskov en vijf jonge vrouwen in opleiding. Het lijkt misschien een strijd van lokaal belang, maar de belangrijkste strategische transportader van het land staat op het spel.
