התוכנית עוקבת אחר תחרות רבת-שלבים בין מספר מעצבי אופנה מתחילים, אשר משתתפים באתגרי עיצוב שונים במטרה לזכות בתואר המנצח, מעצב האופנה המוביל הבא. שנים-עשר המתמודדים נשלחים להתגורר יחד בדירה בניו יורק, ומדי יום נשלחים לבצע משימת עיצוב בגד סביב נושא מוגדר. בשלב הראשון בוחרים המתמודדים דוגמנית ממספר דוגמניות המשתתפות בתוכנית, לאחר מכן מקבלים תקציב לקניית חומרים לעיצוב הבגד. לאחר עיצוב הבגד, בזמן מוגבל, נערכת תצוגת אופנה פרטית של המשתתפים, בה נוכחים שופטי התוכנית, אנשי אופנה מובילים, אשר שופטים את המתמודדים ומחליטים מי מהמתמודדים הוא המנצח במשימה, ומי הוא המפסיד אשר ינופה מהתוכנית.
